INTRODUCTION

Interventional Radiology (IR) is a distinct clinical subspecialty of Radiology that uses minimally invasive, image-guided techniques to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system of the human body thereby providing high-quality patient care.

The clinical evolution of our IR specialty has been accompanied by an increased use of advanced imaging and minimally invasive pinhole treatment techniques that are employed in an ever-increasing number and variety of disease conditions in order to minimize risk to patients, lesser pain, early recovery, shorter hospital stay and improve health outcomes.

Availability of newer and advanced tools / implants, has led to treatment of various disorders involving the Central Nervous System, Vascular system, Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary, Genitourinary, Pulmonary, Musculoskeletal and Cancer through a pinhole size access using needles, catheters, wires, balloons, stents and embolic agents.

KLE’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Centre, is a full-service tertiary/quaternary care facility with 2400 beds covering multiple subspecialities. It is a constituent of J N Medical College, Belagavi under the internationally acclaimed KAHER University. The Clinical Department of Interventional Radiology was established in 2016. In the initial years, the Division of Neuro and Vascular Interventional Radiology was a part of Department of Radiology. However, in the year 2020, a separate subspeciality as Department of Interventional Radiology was established so as to provide dedicated clinical services to patient as well as to start superspeciality DM (Interventional Radiology) and Fellowship FVIR courses.
