FACILITIES

The Department of Pathology consists of 22,000 Sq. Ft.. The departments of Pathology and Microbiology were under a single head.  The department was established in – 1966.  The present department is well equipped for both undergraduate (1966) and Postgraduate (1978).

The Department has total thirteen staff members Professor – 08, Associate Professors – 01 and  Assistant professors – 03, Sr. Resident – 02.It admits 13 MD students each year.

Full fledged sections of Cytology, Haematology, Clinical Pathology and Histopathology are in existence. These various sections cater to the needs of the KLE’s Charitable Hospital, towards diagnostic services. Autopsy room is also available in Charitable Hospital and to conduct paediatric autopsies it is available in the department.

The Charitable Hospital has a Central Laboratory which handles routine Haematological, Clinical pathology, Biochemistry and Microbiology investigations. However, advanced and difficult cases as well as histopathology work is carried out in the college laboratories. Our teaching staff & PGs man this laboratory.

The Teaching staff undertake teaching programmes for undergraduate, postgraduate as well as Paramedical and Allied Courses. The Postgraduate Programmes are held on a fortnightly basis.  The postgraduates are also posted to advance laboratories like Anand Diagnostics and National Institute of Mental Health and Sciences, Bangalore for learning purposes. These postings help them to update themselves with recent techniques, quality control and other aspects. The overall results of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate examinations have been good over the years.

Our staff from the department also lend their help to the KLE’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & MRC, which has a well equipped automated biochemical laboratory, blood bank facilities with component therapy and automated haematological and histopathology laboratories. The postgraduates are also rotated in these laboratories for training purposes.

The Departmental Museum is the heart of the department. It has been acknowledged as one of the best medical museums in this region. It houses 1401 specimens organized in a systematic fashion, helping the postgraduates & undergraduates in understanding the anatomic pathology.

Department undertake academic activities for the benefit of postgraduates including autopsies, seminars, guest lectures, clinical case discussions, workshops & slide seminars. The department has been holding CME Programmes annually since past 37 years. Prestigious awards like Silver Headed Cane/plaque& the Excellence in Teaching are also given away to the experienced pathologists during the event. The feed back so far has been positive & encouraging.

We have a well equipped practical hall which can house 100 undergraduate students .We have a PG reading room accessible to the students at all times. The departmental Library has 183 books, collections of dissertations and CD’s of the same.  We have electronic teaching materials for the students. A meditation room has been created recently, with a view of carrying out in – house meditation.
