The Department of General Medicine was established in J. N. Medical College in the year January 1966. It was headed by Dr. S. D. Shastri from 1966 to 1969. From the year 1969 to 1971 it was guided and improved by Dr. Basavaraj Urs. Dr. S. G. Desai took over the department in 1971 and under his guidance the department developed till 1984. Dr. H. B. Rajshekhar was head of the department from 1984 to 2001 followed by Dr. S. B. Kalagate from 2001 to 31/10/2008 &Dr. Kothiwale V. A. from 31/10/2008 to 30/9/2014. At present Dr. Rekha S Patil taken over as Head of Department from 1/10/2014.
Earlier the students received clinical training in Govt. District Hospital, Belgaum. The old KLES Hospital with 300 beds was started in 1986, the new KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & MRC, Belgaum with 1000 beds in 1996 and the Dr. Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital with 820 beds in 2004. Ever since clinical training to UG & PG students is provided in the KLES Hospitals, which reflect a perfect blend of service to the poor & corporate touch to the patient care in general and superspeciality services at basic and tertiary levels.
At present the Department has 7 units. A.B.C.D.E.F & G Units, the OPD is managed by consultants of respective units (Monday to Sunday) with 11 Professors, 06 Associate Professors, 04 Assistant Professors and 07 Senior Resident, 46 Junior Resident.
