DEPT OF FORENSIC MEDICINE & TOXICOLOGY

I. Brief History Introduction and regular activities being conducted by the Department:

      The department started functioning in 1965 with the start of MBBS course. P.G. Diploma [Diploma in Forensic Medicine] commenced in 1982 while P. G. Degree [Doctor of Medicine] commenced in 1988. It became the first Post Graduate Department in the State to be recognized by the Medical Council of India in 1996. The department was accorded permission by State Government for conducting independent Medico-legal Autopsies at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre in 2003.

      In year 1983, Professor & Head of the department was appointed as State Medico-legal expert and consultant for Belagavi and Bijapur Districts. Since then, all the faculty members render expert opinion service under the Professor & Head of Department to Bijapur, Bagalkot & Belagavi District & KLES’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & MRC, Belagavi.

      The department has conducted 3 Mock trials, hosted C.M.E/workshops in 1979, 1981, 1987, 2000, 2005 & 2008 with guest lectures having been delivered by eminent persons to students and staff every year. Faculties of the department have been regularly invited to deliver guest lectures in various forums for interns, medical officers, private practitioners and police officers.

      The department has hosted State conference [KAMLS CON] in 1995 & 2000 & 2014 and a National Conference of ICFMT (VIII Annual) in 2007.

      Undergraduate students, postgraduate students and staff members have received awards for scoring highest marks and paper presentations respectively. The department has instituted cash prizes to Meritorious Under-Graduate & Post-Graduate students. Six of the postgraduate students of this department are now heads of the department in various colleges.

       The department has always been full with regards to staff members hailed from different parts of the country; have received best paper awards at National and State Level Conferences with many of them serving for long periods.

      Faculties of the department have held the various posts in the subject’s  Academic Associations/ Societies  of State & National level like Vice President of Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine, Indian Congress of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, President, Vice President and Secretary of KAMLS, Editor of KAMLS journal etc.

      The department has established Poison Detection Centre in 2008, which is another first in the State of Karnataka.

    The department is striving hard to increase its Medico-legal work, which has been its weaker area. Four police station area jurisdictions are to be included for Medico-legal autopsies at our hospital shortly. The department also eyes to start an independent embalming unit, work in association with Cardio-thoracic department for cadaveric cardiac valve bank. It also aims to get WHO recognition for its Poison Detection Centre.
