INTRODUCTION
S.V. Jatti, Hod, Department of General surgery started the endoscopy services in J.N. Medical College and KLE’S Hospital & MRC in the year 1985.
He was ably supported by Dr. M.N Sankpal, Professor, Department of General Medicine.
Dr. Santosh D. Hajare DM. DNB. (Gastro) G.S Medical College & KEM Hospital Mumbai started the Department of Medical Gastroenterology in 2001. He has been joined by Dr. Varadaraj P. Gokak DNB (Gastro) from AIG Hospitals Hyderabad in 2013 and Dr. Anand Totagi DNB (Gastro) from Apollo Hospitals Chennai in 2019. The Department is ably supported by Dr. Satish Mugali DNB (Surgical Gastroenterology) and Interventional Radiology services are provided by Dr. Naveen Mulimani DM. (IR) & Dr. Abhinandan Ruge, Fellow (IR).
The MCI has recognized the Department for the post-Doctoral DM Gastroenterology course from the academic year 2020-2021 with an annual intake of three seats. A dedicated teaching programme, extensive clinical Gastroenterology and hands on endoscopy awaits the students of the DM programme in this Department.
DM students will have an opportunity to learn quality bedside gastroenterology, Hepatology & hands on diagnostic & therapeutic Endoscopy. They will get training in performing and interpreting high resolution GI Manometry, breath tests and capsule endoscopy.
They will get an opportunity to present research papers in national and international conferences. They will also get exposed to endoscopic ultrasonography. During the course they would also get exposed for a short period to a ‘dedicated liver transplant unit’ and also to ‘an advanced GI endoscopy center’. External postings during the student period include exposure to GI diagnostic and interventional radiology and GI basic pathology and oncology.
