Introduction

Dr. R.K.Sharma M.Ch graduate from U.K. with a vision and his two young soldiers Dr.B.B.Putti & Dr.S.M. Antin established a full Department in 1982. So far 108 MS and 142 Diploma Orthopaedic. Postgraduates have been trained from the Department are now teachers, successful surgeons, and a few super specialists at home & overseas. Till now the Department had 4 M.S. & 6 Diploma PG Students permission which has been converted to 10 M.S. from the year 2019.

The Department has conducted international, national, regional & state conferences & CME’s and has presented 160 scientific papers of high standard since year 2004. The Department runs UG & PG programme in medicine, physiotherapy and biomedical engineering.

The Department is proud to posses the most experienced senior faculty who have been working for the last 3 decades or more and also the young dynamic Associates and Assistant professors. The faculty has been updating themselves by undergoing various courses & hands on skills, programmes. All the faculties have been trained in A.O. Course and 3 of them have been honoured with international A.O. Fellowships. The faculty’s work has been also recognized through awards and honours, by Rotary, Lions, and many NGO’S The faculty have lent their volunteer medical services in natural calamities like Gujarat Earth quakes, tsunamies, African war hit victims & floods of North Karnataka.

On clinical side, the Department has progressed well with more than 20% increase in patient care statistics, both quantitatively & qualitatively every year. The Department runs apart from routine orthopaedic work specialty surgeries like joint replacement, spine surgeries, trauma service and deformity correction surgeries.

The postgraduates well-structured training programmes has resulted in 80-100% pass rates in university examination and also, Ranks and medals. It is the first department to introduce the OSCE evaluation at departmental level, to prepare our undergraduates for higher competitive entrance tests and for admission of M.Ch programmes overseas.

Research is part of our PG training programmes, apart from this various basic research programmes in biomechanics, drug trials, applied & clinical trials, few of them funded by ICMR, international & national drug agencies are being conducted.

Department was headed by Dr.R.K.Sharma from 1977 to 1992, Dr.B.B.Putti from 1993 to 2009, Dr.V.G.Murakibhavi from 2009 to 2012, Dr. R. B. Uppin from 2012 to 2014, Dr. K. S. Patil from 2014 to 2016. Dr.Shailesh V. Udapudi, from 01/10/2016 to 30/11/2021, Since 1st December 2021, the Department is under the dynamic leadership of Dr.Ravi S. Jatti, has taken over as Head of the Department.

At present the Department has 4 Units – A, B, C & D with 7 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 4 Assistant Professors, 7 Senior Residents & 30 Junior Residents.
