INTRODUCTION

MCI’s Nodal Centre for Faculty Development:

Through basic workshops on Medical Education Technologies (MET) the Medical Council of India (MCI) wants faculty to attain a certain level of expertise in Medical Education. In view of the need for advancing the field of medical education, to keep pace with the current trends & practices and  to provide a platform for Medical Educators to network, Medical Council of India proposes to conduct Advanced Courses in Medical Education for Medical Faculty at the MCI recognized Nodal Centres. The MCI – Regional Training Centre for MET of J.N. Medical College, Belgaum is one of the ten centres that has been upgraded to the status of NODAL CENTRE for conducting Advance Course in Medical Education for Medical faculty. 39 Medical Colleges from North Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Goa have been affiliated to the MCI Nodal center at J. N. Medical College, Belgaum. the MCI Nodal Centre was launched at the hands of Dr. Rajlakshmi M, Chief Consultant, Academic Cell of MCI on 9th September 2014 with  the commencement  of first onsite session of Advance Course from 9th to 12th September 2014. Dr. Alka Rawekar from JNMC, Wardha Maharashtra attended the course as a National Consultant on behalf of MCI.

      The second onsite session was conducted from 3rd to 9th April 2015. A total of 30 new participants registered for the course (inhouse 2 and 28 from constituent colleges) from 20 medical colleges, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, North Karnataka and Goa. All 20 participants from the first batch presented their posters on the overlap day. Dr. Sajith Kumar, Convenor, MCI’s Nodal Centre Govt. Medical College, Kottayam attended the course as a National Consultant on behalf of MCI from 6th to 8th April 2015. Dr. Ved Praksah Mishra, Chairman, Academic Committee of MCI visited the MCI Nodal Centre at JNMC on the overlap day of the two batches i.e. is on 7th April 2015 and addressed the participants.    

      The MCI Advance Course has been renamed as “Fellowship in Medical Education (FIME) by Medical Council of India vide letter No.MCI-Academic/2015/109180-109200 dated 27/05/2015. Henceforth, the MCI Advance Course will be called as “Fellowship in Medical Education” (FIME).

      The Third onsite session was conducted from 3rd to 9th October 2015. A total of 25 new participants registered for the course (inhouse 2 and 23 from constituent colleges) from 20 medical colleges, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, North Karnataka and Goa. All 30 participants from the second batch presented their posters on the overlap day. Dr. (Mrs.) Tripti L. Waghmare (Shrivastava), Convenor, MCI’s Nodal Centre Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sawangi, Wardha attended the course as a National Consultant on behalf of MCI from 6th to 8th October 2015. 

       The Fourth onsite session was conducted from 1st to 7th April 2016. A total of 25 new participants registered for the course (inhouse 2 and 23 from constituent colleges) from 20 medical colleges, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, North Karnataka and Goa. All 25 participants from the third batch presented their posters on the overlap day. Dr. (Mrs.) Tripti L. Waghmare (Shrivastava), Convenor, MCI’s Nodal Centre Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sawangi, Wardha attended the course as a National Consultant on behalf of MCI from 5th to 7th April 2016.

  • Collaboration with University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), College of Medicine, Chicago, USA:

In February 1999 the Department established academic affiliation with its counterpart at UIC, College Of Medicine, Chicago, USA. Under the collaborative activity extended over the five years, selected faculties from the institute have visited UIC for Fellowships on Medical Education:

Dr. S.S. Goudar completed his Masters of Health Professional Education, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA. At the same time the faculty members from UIC DME have visited JNMC twice a year and conducted more than 10 weeklong international workshops on various aspects of Medical Education.With the establishment of KLE University the department is now upgraded as the KLE University Department of Medical Education for Health Professionals (UDEHP).
