Activities of Department of Medical Education:
- Faculty Development:
The department has conducted several Training Programs for training the faculty of J N Medical College on Personality Development, Managerial Skills and, Communication Skills in collaboration with Indian Society of Health Administrators (ISHA), Bangalore and Growth Choice Consultants, Mumbai.
- Training of Teachers through Workshops on Medical Educational Technology and Research Methodology:
The Department has a long history of conducting activities for training Teachers in Medical Educational Technology under the auspices of Medical Council of India, New Delhi and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences – Karnataka, Bangalore. The team of faculty members from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, conducted the first two workshops in 1990-91. Subsequently, three in-house workshops were conducted for the faculty of J N Medical College in 1994-95. In January 1994, the Department had the distinction of hosting the South Zone Workshop on “Training Teachers for Tomorrows Needs” as part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the Medical Council of India. Thereafter, the department conducted three National Workshops for faculty of Medical Colleges in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa. These workshops were held in September 1995, March 1996, and April 1997. The Department has constantly encouraged the faculty to introduce innovations in Teaching-Learning and Evaluation methods. The Department of Physiology introduced Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) in 1992 for the Assessment of Practical Skills of the Students. Several Departments have brought changes in their curriculum with emphasis on small group sessions and inculcating problem-solving skills in the students. Currently the Department is making concerted efforts at introducing the practice of Evidence Based Medicine among the Faculty and Postgraduate students of clinical disciplines.
The Department also hosted two key workshops on behalf of the newly constituted Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in June and August 1996 for evolving a uniform Curriculum for M.B.B.S. Phase I and Phase III courses. The heads of Departments of the concerned disciplines of all the constituent colleges participated in these workshops. It was for the first time that an exercise of this nature was held in Karnataka.
In order to improve the quality of research projects carried out in the institute, the Department conducted a two week Training Program on Epidemiological Approach to Research under the auspices of Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi in October 1996. The faculty members who were trained in this program subsequently conducted a series of in-house workshops for the benefit of the Postgraduate Teachers of our institute and later on for the Postgraduate Teachers representing all the Postgraduate Institutes affiliated to RGUHS in January 1999.
Department of Medical Education was recognized as Regional Training Centre by Medical Council of India, New Delhi on 14th May 2011. The task given to the Regional Training Centre is to train the faculty of these colleges in Medical Education Technologies. 16 Medical colleges of North Karnataka (6 Government & 10 Private) are attached under this RTC. The RTC conducts 4 workshops / year for faculty members of 16 constituent colleges and also for faculty of J.N. Medical College. So far 14 workshops have been conducted, 1st workshop from 14th – 16th May 2011 with the launching program of Regional Training Centre.
- Collaboration with University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine, Chicago, USA:
February 1999 will mark a major milestone in the history of the Department as it established academic affiliation with its counterpart at University of Illinois Chicago, College of Medicine, Chicago, USA. Under the collaborative activity extending over the next five years selected faculty from the institute will visit UIC for Fellowships on Medical Education. At the same time the faculty from UIC will visit JNMC twice a year for conducting weeklong workshops on various aspects of Medical Education. Three International Workshops were held in February, September 1999, February 2000 and the fourth one is being held in September 2000. The first workshop focused on Curriculum, Program and Faculty Evaluation; the second deliberated on various curricular models and the third on the issue of Appraisal of Clinical Performance of Students. It may be noted that the DME of UIC is a WHO Collaborating center and is the oldest Department of its kind in the world and celebrated its 40th Anniversary in July 1999.
- Orientation Workshops for Postgraduate Students:
The Department has been conducting workshops for the Postgraduate Students since 1992 every year. These workshops have aimed at imparting training in Communication Skills, Epidemiological Approach to Research in the Health Sciences, Critical Review of Scientific Literature, Statistical Methods in Biomedical Research, Dissertation Writing and Practice of Evidence Based Medicine.
- First Foundation Course for New Entrants:
The Orientation programs are being held from 1991. The objective of these programs is to expose the students joining the Institution for graduate courses to National Health Policy and National Health Programs as well as Medical Ethics. They are also counseled on the methods to be employed for Psychological Adaptation to the demands posed by a professional career. Emphasis is laid on preparing a value based Primary care physician.
- Second Foundation Course for II Phase M.B.B.S. Students:
The objective of this is to sensitize the students to clinical medicine, and to improve communication skills.
- Third Foundation Course for Internees:
The objective of this course is to improve their clinical skills and to orient them to their role as doctors in the society.
- CME Programmes and Conferences:
The Department provides technical and infrastructure support to the various departments of the Institution for the conduct of State and National level conferences and CME programs. Since the establishment of the department, almost every Department of the college has organized State / National level Conferences and or CME Programs.

Conference Hall:
The department has a modern A/C Conference Hall equipped with all the required Audio-Visual equipments. It can comfortably seat 60 participants.
Media Production Center:
The Medical Illustration section of the department assists the faculty and postgraduate students of the institute in preparing various types of educational media like charts, models, slides, including computer-generated ones, and videos for teaching as well as for presentations at various scientific meetings like conferences and CME programs. The department also has the capability for arranging live interactive video sessions between the Operation Theatre Complex of KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Centre and Dr. B S Jirge Memorial Auditorium of JNMC. This facility has been utilized for several workshops conducted by the departments of ENT, Orthopedics, Surgery, Urology, OBG and Heart Foundation for the benefit of Practitioners, Consultants and Postgraduate students to demonstrate newer surgical techniques.
Communication Center:
The department has a server and a local area network of 7 desktops and 9 laptops with Internet access for electronic mailing and searching electronic medical databases available on the Internet. Efforts are being made to subscribe to other paid-for value added medical databases with advanced search capabilities for promoting the practice of Evidence Based Medicine. The department has been involved in preparing Multimedia Presentations and developing and hosting web pages for the college website.
Plans for the future:
- DOME which is upgraded to University Department of Education for Health Professions (UDEHP) is conducting Postgraduate Diploma in Master of Health Professions Education (PGDMHPE) course leading to the award of a degree in collaboration with its counterpart at College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, USA.
- Develop a WHO Collaborating Center for Medical Education in South East Asia
OSCE /OSPE LAB:
To make assessment more objective and to train students in OSCE/OSPE, this lab has been established. Faculty are trained in conducting OSCE/OSPE during MET workshops. All the departments conduct OSCE / OSPE in this lab. Presently OSCE/OSPE is included for students for internal examinations only.
MCI’s Nodal Centre for Faculty Development:
Through basic workshops on Medical Education Technologies (MET) the Medical Council of India (MCI) wants faculty to attain a certain level of expertise in Medical Education. In view of the need for advancing the field of medical education, to keep pace with the current trends & practices and to provide a platform for Medical Educators to network, Medical Council of India proposes to conduct Advanced Courses in Medical Education for Medical Faculty at the MCI recognized Nodal Centres. The MCI – Regional Training Centre for MET of J.N. Medical College, Belgaum is one of the ten centres that has been upgraded to the status of NODAL CENTRE for conducting Advance Course in Medical Education for Medical faculty. 39 Medical Colleges from North Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Goa have been affiliated to the MCI Nodal center at J. N. Medical College, Belgaum. the MCI Nodal Centre was launched at the hands of Dr. Rajlakshmi M, Chief Consultant, Academic Cell of MCI on 9th September 2014 with the commencement of first onsite session of Advance Course from 9th to 12th September 2014. Dr. Alka Rawekar from JNMC, Wardha Maharashtra attended the course as a National Consultant on behalf of MCI.
The second onsite session was conducted from 3rd to 9th April 2015. A total of 30 new participants registered for the course (inhouse 2 and 28 from constituent colleges) from 20 medical colleges, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, North Karnataka and Goa. All 20 participants from the first batch presented their posters on the overlap day. Dr. Sajith Kumar, Convenor, MCI’s Nodal Centre Govt. Medical College, Kottayam attended the course as a National Consultant on behalf of MCI from 6th to 8th April 2015. Dr. Ved Praksah Mishra, Chairman, Academic Committee of MCI visited the MCI Nodal Centre at JNMC on the overlap day of the two batches i.e. is on 7th April 2015 and addressed the participants.
The MCI Advance Course has been renamed as “Fellowship in Medical Education (FIME) by Medical Council of India vide letter No.MCI-Academic/2015/109180-109200 dated 27/05/2015. Henceforth, the MCI Advance Course will be called as “Fellowship in Medical Education” (FIME).
The Third onsite session was conducted from 3rd to 9th October 2015. A total of 25 new participants registered for the course (inhouse 2 and 23 from constituent colleges) from 20 medical colleges, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, North Karnataka and Goa. All 30 participants from the second batch presented their posters on the overlap day. Dr. (Mrs.) Tripti L. Waghmare (Shrivastava), Convenor, MCI’s Nodal Centre Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sawangi, Wardha attended the course as a National Consultant on behalf of MCI from 6th to 8th October 2015.
The Fourth onsite session was conducted from 1st to 7th April 2016. A total of 25 new participants registered for the course (inhouse 2 and 23 from constituent colleges) from 20 medical colleges, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, North Karnataka and Goa. All 25 participants from the third batch presented their posters on the overlap day. Dr. (Mrs.) Tripti L. Waghmare (Shrivastava), Convenor, MCI’s Nodal Centre Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sawangi, Wardha attended the course as a National Consultant on behalf of MCI from 5th to 7th April 2016.

Dr. S.S. Goudar completed his Masters of Health Professional Education, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA. At the same time the faculty members from UIC DME have visited JNMC twice a year and conducted more than 10 weeklong international workshops on various aspects of Medical Education.
With the establishment of KLE University the department is now upgraded as the KLE University Department of Medical Education for Health Professionals (UDEHP).
