INTRODUCTION
Vision To progressively improve the quality and attain excellence at the national and global level in the fields of graduate and post-graduate surgical education, research and modern surgical health care delivery. Mission
The department was started in 1966. District Hospital: From 1966 to 1986 the clinical teaching and training were imparted to the students in Belgaum District Hospital. There were three units with 30 beds in each unit. The district hospital offered excellent clinical teaching material. The patients in turn were benefited by the surgical services rendered by the faculty of the Department of Surgery. The Old KLES Hospital: In 1986 the KLES hospital was commissioned. This was a 200 bed hospital which opened a new chapter in the history of JNMC. It offered training to the post graduates, but the under graduate teaching continued in District Hospital. The New KLES Hospitals: In 1996 the new KLES Hospital, now christened as KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and MRC was commissioned; the undergraduate & postgraduate teaching & training was partly shifted to this Hospital. In 2006, KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital was started and the District Hospital was totally disconnected from JNMC; this hospital offers excellent teaching facilities and the patients receive free treatment. In the paying section of the hospital, the patients receive treatment at affordable cost and the postgraduates get exposure to the superspeciality services. In the New KLES Hospital the faculty members have realized their potential to practice what they teach, which was impracticable in the District Hospital. Thus the KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & MRC and the Charitable Hospital is a perfect blend of service to the poor. Quality surgical education and corporate touch to the patient care, have added a new dimension to the health care delivery system of the country, and have carved a niche in the global map of medical institutions. Presently the Surgery Department has eight units with 30 beds each. Minimal Access Surgery, Endoscopy and Diabetic Foot Clinic have been added to the free side. At present the Department is imparting the Postgraduate training to 29 students. The intake of post graduate students in the department of surgery has been increased from 12 to 18 from 2020-2021. The Men who captained and nurtured the department:
At present there are 29 faculty members in the Department, including 7 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 11 Assistant Professors & 7 Sr. Residents.
