The Specialty:
The Surgical Oncology department was established at KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital & MRC, Belagavi, in the year 2012. The department focuses on screening, diagnosis and surgical management of cancer cases.
The Department:
The Department of surgical oncology was established at the Hospital in the year 2012. The Department has an independent identity. It has undertaken a vast number of surgeries in various fields of surgical oncology like: , Head and Neck cancer , Breast cancer , Thoracic , GI & HPB cancer surgery, Colo-rectal cancer, Urogenital cancer, Bone and Soft tissue , Skin cancer, associated reconstructive etc. The Department has a full-fledged state-of-art equipped Operation Theatre to conduct all Major Surgeries. It has 3 major operation theatres. The OT is equipped with advanced laparoscopy instruments. Advanced laparoscopy procedures are routinely performed. The department has a separate Minor Operating room for minor day care procedures.
The Department has well equipped ward for surgical oncology. The department has separate OPD area along with teaching room.
The institute has another unit “KLES Belgaum Cancer Hospital”, about 1.5 km away from the medical college. Surgical Oncology OPD and OTs are performed regularly in this center. It has the radiation facility as well.
The institute is coming up with a separate Oncology wing in the premises of the main hospital. It is expected to be completed in 6 months. This facility will have capacity to install 3 additional radiation units.
The Surgical Oncology department is supported by 3 Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologist and a Pediatric Hemato-Oncologist.
The Surgical Oncology department is supported by an established Plastic Surgery department. Free flaps are performed regularly.
Medical Council of India has given permission to start M.Ch. Surgical Oncology program from the academic year 2020-2021.
