INTRODUCTION
Brief History of the Department and write-up (in narrative form not exceeding more than 250 words) about the academic and extension activities conducted by the department and academic and extra-curricular achievements of the faculty members during the year 2018 Jan-Dec.
The practice of ENT started in the first half of 20th century. Today it extends from dura to pleura including ear nose and throat, the skull base, neck, mediastinum and upper gastrointestinal tract, and so is aptly designated as the specialty of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. The Department of ENT and HNS at J.N Medical College came into existence in 1967 with the aim of teaching the undergraduate students, provide quality ENT care to needy patients and to produce a basic medical professional. The commencement of post graduate courses in ENT, D.L.O. (1982), M.S. (1987) and The department has also started Fellowship in Micro Ear Surgery, a 1 year program, in collaboration with Vijaya ENT Care Centre Bangalore, that was started in the year 2010, has revolutionized the departmental setup in academics, research and to provide optimum service to patients. About 150 – 200 patients attend OPD and around 10 patients undergo operations at K.L.E.S. Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and MRC every day. The ENT ward with 60 beds is almost full. There is a gradual increase in the number of outpatients, inpatients and operations. Till now 120 M.S. and 88 D.L.O. students have passed out and during 2016 our student bagged gold medal for scoring highest at the University in M.S. (ENT).
The department after ably led by 5 various HOD’s previously, now is currently headed by Dr.Anil S.Harugop since 2016, The faculty of the department includes one Professor and H.O.D., 6 Professors, 1 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors, 2 Senior Resident and 1 Junior Resident, with good teaching experience.
All the faculty members actively participate at various health checkup camps, workshops, conferences as resource persons and have given number of guest lectures. About 75 papers have been published by the faculty in various Journals. Till date the department has organized 25 Workshops, 3 State Level and 1 Zonal Conference.
The department has established collaboration with Causes Clinic, Beziers France in 2008 in order to facilitate research and development through Live International Otology Network every year. MOU was signed again for academic collaboration with Cause Ear Clinic, France in the month of January 2018 for next five years. In November 2015, department has established two collaboration and MOU with Asan Medical center, Seoul , South Korea and MIMER, Talegaon, Pune to establish research and training in the field of Rhinoplasty.
The Department has strong association with alumni & KLE University (KAHER’s) recognized Dr.H.Vijayendra, Dr.Virendra Ghaisas and Dr.Srinivas D R as Visiting Professors to conduct academic activities annually.
Till date the faculty have bagged 17 gold medals in various conferences & workshops a total of 77 papers published in various International and National Journals are in the credit of the department.
Since its inception, the department also has conducted various conferences, Workshops and CME’s every year, which includes South zone and 3 state conferences.
In the year 2019, the department has conducted workshop on “CME on Essential Updates for UG’s 2019” and participated in LION-Live International Otological Network-2019. It also observed the “Balance Awareness Week” in 3rd week of September 2019 and Conducted PG Orientation Programme. On 6th & 7th December 2019 Department conducted CME on Basic and Advanced Vestibular Disorders at the hands of Dr. Srinivas D R our esteemed Alumnus and Doctor Scientist.
In the year 2019, Dr.Anil S Harugop Prof.& HOD, has bagged the first prize for Dr.K.U.Shah senior consultant award paper in 14th ASIA OCEANIA 2019 & 71st Annual Conference of AOI January 2019 held on 9-13th January 2019 at Hyderabad and He is been elected as Member of editorial board National AOI for consecutive two years ie. 2017-18 and 2018-19.
