INTRODUCTION

The Department of Neurosurgery at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Center, Belgaum came into existence in the year 1982, when Dr. S. S. Mahantshetti joined as Assistant Professor after completing his training in Neurosurgery at NIMHANS, Bangalore.   Dr. S. S. Mahantshetti was promoted as Head of the Department in the year 1990.  To start with, he alone looked after the neurosurgical services due to the lack of working hands.  Working single-handed, Dr. S. S. Mahantshetti got some assistance 23 years later namely Dr. Rajesh Y. Shenoy and Dr. Praful S. Maste also joined the department as Assistant Professors and now working as Professors in the department. Dr. Prakash Mahantshetti and Dr. Abhishek Patil joined the department as faculty in the year 2016 and 2020 respectively.

Since inception, the workload of the department has been increasing by leaps and bounds.  In the last 29 years, Department has made a long journey in serving the people of this region including those of adjoining states in the management of various neurosurgical conditions including craniospinal trauma, tumours, infective and congenital disorders of the nervous system.  With a moderate beginning in 1982, when only few patients were operated upon, today we operate more than 700 cases annually, so also the admissions have also increased annually.

All operations on the brain and spine are all carried out by skilled surgeons highly specialized in different sub-specialities of neurosurgery.  All modalities of investigations like 3T MRI, 128 slice spiral CT, digital substraction angiography and other modalities and round the clock laboratory services are available at KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & Medical Research Centre.

The Department is well equipped with ultra-modern technology and equipments and is upgraded from time to time that is the Leica OHX and Zeiss operative microscopes, neuro-navigation, cranial and spinal endoscope systems, CUSA machine, flat panel C-ARM X-ray machines, various neurosurgical equipments like high speed drill, craniotomes, microsurgical instruments, Sugita and Mayfield clamps, Maquet operating tables etc, which are necessary to provide state of the art neurosurgical care.  Efforts are being made to procure equipment for stereotactic and functional neurosurgery.

The neurosurgery patients are housed in the following areas: Neurosurgery General Ward, Neurosurgery Step Down ICU and Hi-tech ICU with ventilators at Ghataprabha Floor (G+4); East Wing ICU with ventilators in Markandaya Floor (G+5), Trauma Care & Emergency Medical Services Ward in the Causality Section and Private/Semi-Private Rooms.
